Downdrift of coastal defences at Hornsea, the beach is starved of sediment. This provides little or no defences from the sea.
An embayment has formed beyond the final groyne. Even during neap tides, the sea reaches the base of the cliffs to the south of the defences and causes erosion. This has accelerated the rate of erosion in this area.
The area of slumping featured in this video began moving on Friday 8th March 2019. An area of cliff 50m x 8.5 metres slumped. the initial scar was 95cm deep. By the following week, it was 300cm.
