Lower Kenney Creek Restoration Project: Building Healthy Resilient River Systems in Whatcom County.

Learn how salmon can now return to Lower Kenney Creek in Whatcom County, Washington. After more than 50 years of restricted fish passage caused by a 5-foot culvert, Whatcom Land Trust, in collaboration with Whatcom County, the Whatcom Conservation District, the Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA), and hundreds of dedicated volunteers, has completed a restoration project that reconnects and enhances critical salmon habitat.

The culvert has been removed and replaced with a 115-foot bridge above Lower Kenney Creek, allowing salmon and other fish to move freely upstream. The Creek has also been restored to a natural, meandering channel and large woody debris has been placed by NSEA to provide healthy, resilient habitat that supports fish spawning and rearing.

This project improves fish passage, strengthens water quality, and helps build a more resilient river for salmon and other native species. It reflects the power of collaboration and long-term stewardship to protect and restore the lands and waters that sustain our community.
