By starting with direct reinforcement, throwing the food, you can easily introduce a bridge signal such as a clicker. Notice how quickly the dog transitions to responding to the clicker. This gives the trainer many more options in the reinforcement process. You can now choose between direct or indirect reinforcement, and throughout the dog’s career I use both, following roughly an 80/20 rule: about 80 percent indirect reinforcement (using the bridge signal) and 20 percent direct reinforcement.
To be clear, I always begin with direct reinforcement, but I switch to indirect reinforcement quite early in the process.
