A tour of the Wisłoujście fortress, in Gdansk (Poland). We discuss the history and construction of this amazing site, and connect it to modern life.

The site dates to at least the 1,000s and has had a brick lighthouse here since the 1430s. It's an important landmark, marking shipping lanes into the busy port from at least 1539, and protection for the city and it's port through many battles with Sweden (1627), Russian (1734), Prussians (1793, 1814), Napoleonic France (1807).

It's been undergoing preservation since 1974, and reconstruction since 1990s. It was opened to the public in 2009, and it's a real beaut. We see the major features of the lighthouse, the inner square (Fort Carre), and the inner bastions - each in it's own state of (dis)repair. Along the way, we explain the various powers vying to hold this gem.
