In this video I explore a strange question: why don’t some European countries have their own language? When we think of a country, we usually imagine its flag, name, location, and language. But oddly, not every nation in Europe has a unique language of its own. Instead, many share or adapt the tongues of their larger neighbors. From Belgium’s split between Dutch and French, to Switzerland’s four official languages, to Austria, Liechtenstein, and Luxembourg’s use of German, and even microstates like Monaco, San Marino, Andorra, and the Vatican, I’ll explain how history, politics, and culture shaped their linguistic identities. I also look at Kosovo and Ireland, where questions of language connect deeply with national identity, colonization, and cultural survival.
