A new Global Witness investigation reveals that construction of the New Manila International Airport has displaced coastal communities in Manila Bay. Around 700 families have reportedly been displaced by the project. Residents reported feeling intimidated by armed soldiers who were stationed nearby by the local government. Soldiers reportedly also went door-to-door during a consultation process carried out by the local developer, leaving community members describing feeling “terrified”.
The airport will encroach on a recommended protected area, threatening irreplaceable local ecosystems which the local communities rely on for fishing and flood protection.
Two Dutch companies are involved in the project – dredging giant Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. later signed a contract worth €1.5 billion to construct the first phase of the project. This was insured by the Dutch state via export credit agency Atradius Dutch State Business (Atradius DSB).
It’s time to put an end to companies profiting from social and environmental abuse: we’re calling on the EU to pass a strong corporate accountability law to prevent these types of harm.
