ABSTRACT
The large and urgent reductions in environmental impacts cannot be achieved without a substantial transformation of our socio-economic system. Similarly, pressing social issues such as inequality and work across Europe cannot be addressed without considering environmental impacts. At the same time, the scale and pace of the economic transformation needed raises important questions about how it can be delivered while maintaining a stable macroeconomy. Building on the insights of ecological economics, the field of ecological macroeconomics has emerged over the last few years as an attempt to develop macroeconomic approaches that can integrate the interconnected aspects of the sustainability transformation. It specifically aims to provide macroeconomic analysis linking environmental impacts, inequality outcomes and financial stability to inform discussions on how we can transform the economy to provide prosperity within planetary boundaries. This includes an explicit aim to go beyond GDP as a measure of progress and to explore pathways to end social reliance on continued GDP growth. It therefore attempts to develop holistic methods for analysing the economic system to foster the development of effective solutions, using a pluralist and transdisciplinary approach to exploring and formulating sustainable futures. The lecture discusses the main pillars of this emerging field.
