Two methods of establishing a network in a “Networked Lighting Control” (NLC) system are 1.) using wires, and 2.) wirelessly. In this presentation, we will start by reviewing how the DesignLights Consortium (DLC) defines NLCs, and we’ll also review the benefits of using these systems. We will examine the details of a wireless fixture-integrated controller as well as a digital LED driver that uses a wired protocol for connection to the network. We’ll discuss advantages and disadvantages of each, and also look at examples of the topologies for wired as well as wireless NLC systems, and even hybrid systems that use both wired as well as wireless connections to the network. We’ll touch on the issue of cybersecurity. Lastly, specific instructions will be given on how to access the DLC’s free Qualified Products List (QPL) for NLC systems.
