This powerful hymn was written by Rev. Henry Francis Lyte (1793–1847) — a Scottish minister whose frail health never shook his faith in God. On the eve of his departure to seek healing, he penned these immortal words, expressing his deep trust and longing for divine companionship:

“When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.”

The melody, known as “Eventide”, was composed by William H. Monk, perfectly capturing the solemn beauty and comfort of the hymn.
