In this video I, woodturner William Hunt turn a small bowl from sycamore, finish it with metallic acrylic paints, then cut 14 x 3.2mm flutes along the bowl using the router jig.
This project is a kind of trial and exploration task chasing the elusive wood-turned latticework. I wanted to see how the router jig moved free-hand over the table and also if the idea of an internal spigot worked OK.
I had to bling up the rather boring piece of off-the-shelf sycamore. I chose metallic acrylic paints for three reasons:
They look pretty cool when blended together.
Any damage caused by the guide bush on the router jig can easily be repaired.
The colours will not penetrate in the wood (which can sealed with acrylic sanding sealer) potentially spoiling the flutes.
Paul Howard’s Fluting Jig is an amazing addition to the woodturners tool kit and opens up all kinds of new turning opportunities.
