Charlie Mariano's Jazz World
Born in 1923, the son of an Italian immigrant, Mariano took the saxophone into his hands at a young age. At 19 he played in an army band, he then studied with Joe Viola at the Berkley School of Music in Boston and later became sideman to Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. From Duke Elligton and then to the big band of Stan Keton where he was already performing solo. In 1960, he travels to California where he soaked up “white Jazz” from Shelly Manne, and then in Japan where he creates a band with pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi. Upon his return to Europe, he adopted a mature style and continued experimenting with different genres. Until the end of his life, his interest remained focused on progressive musical approaches.
The variety of Charlie Mariano's musical universe is showcased in this concert, as he joins old friends and like-minded musicians with a jazz landscape, from Swing and Bebop to Free and Rock Jazz.
