Spoilers: I didn't do George's dance.
This is such a pleasant little song. Hard to believe it was written by the same guy who penned "Working Class Hero" 6 years later.
The instrumentation is a lot of fun! John's rhythm is bouncy, propelling the song forward. He adds neat little syncopations throughout to keep things from getting stale. Paul's bass is a fun line, lots of movement. Yet another standout song for the Rickenbacker 360-12c63, as well. Chime heaven.
Trivia:
Recorded initially on February 25, 1964 in 3 takes in the same session as "You Can't Do That" and "And I Love Her" (and only 9 days after their Miami taping of the Ed Sullivan Show). They regrouped the next day and produced a whopping 18 takes. Take 9 turned out as the master.
A neat video with isolated tracks is on YouTube. Extra helpful (and listen to that snare pop!). • Deconstructing I Should Have Known Better ...
Fun little outtake from a rehearsal of "Scene at 6:30" - • The Beatles - I Should Have Known Better (... .
Another gem from YouTube. Best version of this song I've ever heard. • The Beatles - I Should've Known Better but...
Enjoy! Let me know what you think!
