In 1994, Democrats attempted to distract voters from the perpetual embarrassment of President Bill Clinton's sexual indiscretions by making workplace harassment their new culture war target. They also saw this front as an opportunity to distinguish themselves from a GOP that had lionized Clarence "Long Dong Silver" Thomas for engaging in similar behavior. (Happy now, snowflakes?) Corporate America responded with the "workplace sensitivity training" craze. Kmart was at its all-time peak of 2,486 locations and wanted to ensure their ass was sufficiently covered for the inevitable tidal wave of lawsuits to come.
