The UNESCO World Heritage site of Pont du Gard is an enormous Roman aqueduct in southern France, dating from the early 1st century AD. Built to carry water to the city of Nîmes, the full water course ran for nearly 50 kilometres, though much of it is now lost. The aqueduct, at 48 metres high and 300 metres long, is one of the most impressive Roman constructions still remaining in Europe today.
