Match IP Address with REGEX: Step By Step Regular Expression Tutorial to Validate IPv4

This video tutorial will show you how to match IP-addresses using Regular expression (REGEX) in Notepad++. We will write the regex step by step to match and validate ipaddresses. We will make sure that all the rules of ipaddress (IPv4) are validated.

TEST THESE IP ADDRESSES using REGEX. Some of these are valid and others are invalid.

11.1.1.0
101.1.1.0
201.1.1.0
192.168.1.1
292.168.1.255
254.123.12.1
1.2.3.4
127.1.1.1
192.168.1.1
300.250.1.1
I.1.2.3.
I.Am.not.an.ip
10.I.am.255
254.254.254.254
255.255.255.255

Here are the rules for valid IPv4 IP addresses.

1. Four integers ranging from zero to 255.
2. Any address with more than three dots (.) is not valid.
3. Any address with number greater than 255 is invalid.


Here is a full Regular expression for matching ip address list.

(25[0-5]|2[0-4][0-9]|[01]?[0-9][0-9]?)\.
(25[0-5]|2[0-4][0-9]|[01]?[0-9][0-9]?)\.
(25[0-5]|2[0-4][0-9]|[01]?[0-9][0-9]?)\.
(25[0-5]|2[0-4][0-9]|[01]?[0-9][0-9]?)

Let's break this into smaller pieces:

[0-9][0-9]? covers 0-99 numbers
1[0-9][0-9] covers 100-199 numbers
2[0-9][0-9] - Will this work? No.
2[0-9][5] - How about this? No.
2[0-4][0-9] - covers 200 to 249
25[0-5] - covers 250-255
