This video explains what parents, teachers and student advisors need to know as learners prepare to move from Junior School to Senior School under the CBC system in January 2026.
It focuses on two key decisions every learner must make:
1. Choosing subject combinations – each learner will take 7 subjects: 4 compulsory and 3 electives. The 3 electives determine their pathway (STEM, Social Sciences, Arts & Sports).
2. Choosing schools – learners will select up to 12 Senior Schools across different categories (C1 to C4), based on the subject combinations offered and whether the school is a boarding or day school.
We also look at how performance in Junior School will affect placement. This includes the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA), which counts for 60%, and School-Based Assessments (SBAs) from Grades 7 and 8, which count for 40%.
Not every learner will get their first choice, but what matters is preparing them with a strong foundation and supporting them to adapt in a changing world.
This is a practical guide to help you support learners through this important stage of their education journey.
