During the days leading up to November 1, ofrendas are built to honor friends and relatives who have passed away in celebration of el Día de Muertos. The brilliantly colored cempasúchil (marigold) flowers are an integral part of the celebration, thought to lead souls on a path from their burial place to their family homes with their brilliant color and musky aroma.
We traveled to Santiago Cuixtla, Oaxaca, to spend time with farmers who grow cempasúchil every year and learn about the rich symbolism and deep affection that surround this iconic flower.
