Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849) - Prelude in C-sharp Minor, Op. 45
It's a wonder to me that this piece isn't performed more often. I think it's Chopin at his finest - one of my favorite of all his Preludes. To me, more so than most of his music, it almost sounds like an improvisation, albeit a really wonderful one. When he sent the manuscript to his copyist, Chopin attached a note that said "it is well modulated, isn't it?", expressing a satisfaction he rarely showed. I love the seemingly endless succession of very chromatic modulations, the unexpected cadenza followed by the thrilling climax, and then the way it just melts slowly back into the main theme before dying away.
