We introduce the coupling constant, J, and its dependence on both dihedral angle and through-bond distance. Examples of ranges of coupling constants are given for 2-, 3-, and 4-bond constants in alkenes, alkanes, and arenes. Complex (but first-order) multiplets, such as doublets-of-doublets for monosubstituted alkenes or epoxides, are introduced.
