TEXTURES Songs Explained // Part 1: The Delay of Reaching Home

The trick is to use an 8th note dotted delay: You can get a cool unique 16th note feel when you hit the notes of your melody by just using 8th notes.
The delay adds the dotted eighth; resulting in a 16th note pulse.

My biggest inspiration for using this, had been David Howell Evans, better known as "The Edge," the lead guitarist for the Irish rock band U2. He is known for his unique playing style and his use of effects, particularly his signature use of delay.

One of the most famous examples of The Edge's use of the dotted eighth note delay can be heard in the opening guitar riff of the song "Where the Streets Have No Name." The riff is built around a repeating pattern of arpeggiated chords that are layered on top of each other using the delay effect. The result is a swirling, almost hypnotic sound that builds in intensity as the song progresses.

Another example of The Edge's use of the dotted eighth note delay can be heard in the song "Pride (In the Name of Love)." In this song, The Edge uses the delay effect to create a rhythmic pattern that underpins the entire track. The effect is subtle but powerful, giving the song a sense of forward motion and momentum.
Other artists that have incorporated this sound are: Joe Satriani, Karnivool, Dead Letter Circus.
