Preetz ist eine Kleinstadt im Kreis Plön, östlich von Kiel gelegen, und wird aufgrund ihrer Lage zwischen Seen, Flüssen und Wäldern oft als „Tor zur Holsteinischen Schweiz“ bezeichnet. Die Stadt entwickelte sich historisch rund um das im 13. Jahrhundert gegründete Kloster Preetz, das bis heute das Stadtbild prägt und als kulturelles Zentrum dient. Aus dem Kloster ging später ein adliges Damenstift hervor, dessen Gebäude und Parkanlagen noch erhalten sind. Preetz liegt direkt an der Schwentine, die sich hier seenartig verbreitert und der Stadt einen stark wassergeprägten Charakter verleiht. Kanufahren, Rudern und Spaziergänge entlang der Uferwege gehören zum Alltag. Die Innenstadt ist überschaubar und geprägt von kleineren Geschäften, Cafés und öffentlichen Einrichtungen, ergänzt durch Wohngebiete aus unterschiedlichen Bauzeiten. Preetz war lange ein industrieller Standort, insbesondere durch Maschinenbau und Metallverarbeitung, was sich noch heute in ehemaligen Fabrikarealen widerspiegelt. Gleichzeitig ist die Stadt ein wichtiger Wohnort für Pendler nach Kiel. Durch den Bahnhof an der Strecke Kiel–Lübeck ist Preetz sehr gut an den regionalen Bahnverkehr angebunden. Natur, Geschichte und funktionale Infrastruktur verbinden sich hier zu einer ruhigen, lebensnahen Stadt mit regionaler Bedeutung.
Preetz is a small town in the district of Plön, located east of Kiel, and is often referred to as the “Gateway to Holstein Switzerland” due to its setting among lakes, rivers, and wooded landscapes. The town’s historical development centers on Preetz Monastery, founded in the 13th century, which still shapes the townscape and serves as a cultural focal point. The monastery later became a noble ladies’ convent, and its buildings and parkland remain intact. Preetz lies directly along the Schwentine River, which widens into lake-like sections here and gives the town a strong connection to water. Canoeing, rowing, and walking along the riverside paths are integral parts of local life. The town center is compact, featuring small shops, cafés, and public institutions, surrounded by residential areas from various periods. Preetz also has an industrial past, particularly in mechanical engineering and metalworking, traces of which remain in former factory sites. At the same time, it functions as a residential town for commuters traveling to Kiel. With a railway station on the Kiel–Lübeck line, Preetz is well connected to regional transport. Overall, the town combines natural surroundings, historical depth, and practical infrastructure into a calm and livable place of regional importance.
