Watch this 10 minute video of rebuilding the Freelander.
I decided to start my own YouTube channel back in early 2019, I watch a lot of B is for Build, TJHunt, and Goonzquad. I wanted to start off with something simple that I know i can use after, I purchased this from Copart for about £1500.
From the pictures online I knew it needed a front bumper and headlight, I quickly inspected it and then ordered up the radiator, Intercooler and washer bottle. When the parts arrived I quickly built up the front end, quickly sprayed the front bumper and buttoned it back together. So after about £300 parts and a quick spray job on the bumper it was ready to roll, I then used this as my daily while progressing through the build.
Next was to replace the window regulator as the cable had gone, and the rear diff was noisy, on further inspection found the prop shaft missing, I ordered one and fitted it, which made the noise at the back worse, but it was back to a 4x4.
I wanted to upgrade the audio and fitted the cheap and cheerful Xtrons android unit, easy job, but had to remove all the parrot kit wiring.
After that I replaced the timing belt, there was no history of this being done so I didn't want to risk it, luckily I had decided to do it as the old belt was starting to crack, to be honest not a bad job to do.
I then started to work in Derby, and doing 100 miles a day, I was using the Freelander and it worked great, I could not fault it, and then I found a job closer to home which came with a car, so the Freelander was coming to a point where it could go to a new owner, however 1 week before I was due to move job, it broke down, the slave cylinder failed and I had to get recovered back home. This is where it stood for approx 9 months as I had no use for it and we were also moving house. Then Coronavirus came and we went into lock-down, this gave me the time to get this up and running again.
The interior was a complete mess, and the only way to do a deep clean is to remove it, I needed to do this as I could tell it had a water ingress somewhere and needed to fix that, I removed all the seats and roof lining, cleaned all the mold, deep cleaned the carpets, and removed the head lining, I then used Autobrite black dye (3 bottles) and died the head lining black, and to be honest I was a bit worried as i wasn't sure how it would come out, but it was brilliant, I rebuilt the interior and what a massive difference.
I then needed to address the clutch issue, managed to get the clutch before lockdown, and started to strip it down, removed the box and confirmed the slave cylinder had failed, the clutch was in good condition but the flywheel had so much play in it, which I guessed it would as it was noisy, so i managed to get a used flywheel off Ebay for £40, when it arrived it had surface rust, I cleaned this and it came out spot on. I rebuilt the Freelander with a new slave cylinder, clutch and a used Flywheel. When the job was done I was so happy, it was difficult on your back.
After this I decided to do all the little jobs I had put off, the handbrake only worked one side, I striped the rear brakes and found the handbrake arm seized, I cleaned it, applied WD-40 and worked it free, I then added some grease to the moving part to make sure it doesn't stick again.
The other issue I have lived with is the rear washer and headlamp washer didn't work, only the fronts worked, when I inspected it I found the pipes had been swapped over to atleast get the fronts to work, I put this back to how they should and then the rears did work, so now the fronts don't and also the headlamp washers, which makes more sense, I carried out the wiring checks and everything checks out OK, I fed 12 v direct to the pumps and they worked. I couldn't get hold of a wiper stalk at the time and decided to take a look at it myself, I took all apart and found the wiring inside it was disconnected, I put this back together and it worked correctly.
The impression I get is that this Freelander lost its value, got a bit older, a bit scruffy and wasn't worth spending the money on it, and then was in an accident and was written off. But i'm glad I got hold of it, I've loved working on it, I think they are great to drive, I would love to do mods to it and see what it can handle off road, who knows what can happen?
Anyway, that's the story of this Freelander 2, atleast it didn't end up in a crusher! Thanks for watching and reading.
