GROVE: Bassetlaw Parish #13 of 66

Swinging into the South East of Retford with this one, as Bassetlaw starts to open up now and we're getting further into the wonderful open countryside. the villages are going to start to get smaller and much more agricultural now.

Perhaps that's unsurprising here. The village we're looking at today was once an estate village, like Wentworth in Rotherham, only much smaller and with a park that is only a fraction of the size. The Tudor house that once stood here was demolished in 1951 and the park that was left behind is not really a park - to the untrained eye it's just farmland.

However, digging through Bassetlaw Council's website throws up this park in a very useful document, because there's very little online about this parish in general. That could be attributed to the name, which so often can be misinterpreted by search engines to mean a street name rather than a place name.

Nevertheless, i did find some information about not only the park and house here but the buildings that used to be a part of them, the very beautiful St Helen's Church with it's graveyard map, and of course the Cross, which is a WWI war memorial, situated on a small hill off the main street, if you're brave enough to ascend the steps to it.

There's some fantastic views over the Trent valley, because this one's on a hill. One of Bassetlaw's smallest, this is GROVE.
