Total Grazing with 1 MILLION Pounds Stocking Density? /How To Calculate Density

Welcome back to Tick Creek Ranch! In this video, we’re diving deep into one of the most misunderstood concepts in regenerative grazing: stock density.

As we move through the calving season here in the Missouri Ozarks, I address a conversation I’ve been having in one of the grazing groups online. There’s a lot of confusion between stock density, stocking rate, carrying capacity, and harvest efficiency—and today I break down what each term really means and why it’s important to understand them if you’re managing land with cattle, sheep, goats, or horses.

We’re total grazers here, practicing what’s also known as non-selective ultra-high-density grazing—a method we’ve adopted and refined under the teachings of Jim Elizondo of Real Wealth Ranching. I share how stock density is just a tool—not a goal—and how it should be based on forage quality, quantity, and your animals’ genetics. You’ll also learn how I calculate our stock density using a basic rangefinder and some quick math.

We’ll talk about real-world examples, including a mistake I made last year with late mowing for regrowth—and what I’m doing differently this year. I also share why most graziers are grazing too selectively and why that might be hurting land productivity and long-term performance.
