University of Massachusetts Amherst North Apartments tour


Except I didn't jump cut or not leave my room like every other dumb video that has been uploaded. This isn't a VLOG and I won't spend 10 minutes explaining every piece of furniture or telling you what ply our toilet paper is (unlike some other tours).

What comes with the apartment:
-Adjustable heating and air conditioning. The apartment comes with 2 separate thermostats. One controls the all 4 bedrooms, the other controls the living room. You can set the temperature from 71 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit.
-All the shades in the living room as well as the bed rooms are pre-installed.
-Living room has 3 openable windows, each bedroom has 1.
-Shower curtains are already strung and the support bar is screwed into the wall so don't attempt to buy your own and put it on.
-Living room: coffee table, long couch, possibly a rolling chair, and two small individual couches. TV and TV stand, and rug are not included
-Kitchen: Refrigerator, microwave, trash can, 2 island chairs, recycling bins, compost bin, sink has a garbage disposal.
-Individual rooms: Large wardrobe with 2 sliding drawers, Bureau with 3 sliding drawers, and a desk with a pull out drawer in the center as well as 3 smaller individual ones off to the side. Obviously mattress and bed frame are included. NO rugs included.
-Entrance: 4 post coat rack, no shoe rack but highly recommended.

-You'll need small trash cans and bags for the bathrooms and bedrooms. The showers dont have any racks for shampoo or soap so you'll have to buy one of those racks if wanted (first bathroom has one hanging off the spigot/nozzle).

Likes:
I'm in biomed engineering and I have about a 5-10 minute walk for all my classes. Anything not really STEM, math, physics, computer science related have about a 15 +/ a few minutes walk. Much better than the 20-25 I used to walk from Southwest.
-WIFI is amazing and extremely consistent in terms of having full WIFI bars everywhere in the apartment to almost never being down/laggy. Coming from Southwest, you'll know eduroam sometimes blows.
As of uploading this video Feb 2020, my internet speed test is:
Ping: 6
Download: 102Mbps
Upload: 184Mpbs
These speeds were better towards the start of the year, (5 ping, 200+ both upload and download), but obviously people connect more stuff over time. Still amazing nevertheless.
Extremely good for watching Netflix or gaming (I get about 10-15 ping on COD and RL).
Also note, this test was conducted with a wireless adapter. North Apartments allows you to use Ethernet, unlike the rest of campus, so better speeds could be achieved.
-Heat and A/C
-Showers and sink get hot very quick. Electric stove works pretty well
-Refrigerator/freezer can fit a lot
-Being able to cook your own meals and whatnot is great. I highly recommend getting the YCMP 65 plan. You can get it at any year (fresh, soph...). It includes 65 swipes and $125 dining dollars. Only $800.
-Apartment is unlocked using Ucard instead of a physical key. Your bedroom is lockable and has its own physical key.
-Cellular is great. I'm on Verizon and get about 4 bars service.
-Toilets work pretty damn well, high pressure.
-Lastly, having your own room is great.

Small annoyances/dislikes:
-The rectangular shaped bathroom is a little small/awkward so you cant really fit a large bathmat at all.
-The heating never truly gets to 75 even if you set it so. Expect the apartment to only be 70-72 at any given time during the winter.
-Microwave low key sucks. Not sure if its just below 1000 watts or what the deal is, but expect to add 5-10 seconds to any given time. Not a big deal.

Recommendations:
-Have a car to use for grocery runs. Parking lot is only about a 2-3 minute walk. Big Y is the closets and cheapest at about a 7 minute drive. Sign up for the free silver rewards card and app and you'll get free food/really good deals sometimes.
-Have 1 person cook dinner Monday-Thursday, use swipes on weekend at dining halls.
-Having cleaning schedules for everyone.
-Get rugs, a dish drying stand, (Toaster oven even though its not allowed), pans, pots, silverware, plates, bowls, cleaning supplies, TV.
-Don't be a dick and clean your own dishes and plates.

Things I didn't show:
-Food closet to the left of the fridge. It's just a small walk in closet with 4 shelves to store food and other supplies on.

Yes there are 4 bedrooms, just figured once you've seen two, you've seen them all.
Bathroom closer to the entrance is a small rectangle shape, other bathroom at the end of the hall is L shaped.

This is a corner room apartment, others may look a little different depending on where you live, but the overall layout and size should be the same. Other VLOGS/tours show off the handicapped apartments, such as Syn's tour video that's 10x longer than this one, so that's something to keep in mind.
