Perché Fankhauser canta in italiano? E perché Dalla? E inoltre, perché Milano?
Siccome ha trascorso gran parte della sua gioventù nel canton Ticino, Philipp Fankhauser è stato esposto ai grandi cantautori italiani degli anni settanta e ottanta. De Gregori, De André, Battisti, Guccini, Bennato e soprattutto Lucio Dalla erano presenti sulle varie radio ticinesi e anche nella sua collezione di dischi. Tra questi il disco “Lucio Dalla”, uscito nel 1978 che comprende i brani “Milano” e “L’anno che verrà”, ebbe un impatto enorme sul quattordicenne. “Onestamente”, dice Fankhauser oggi, “avrei voluto interpretare “L’anno che verrà”, però non ci sono riuscito. Lucio aveva una gamma vocale enorme, ed io non ho trovato come posizionarmi in modo ideale. Così ho lasciato stare e mi sono dedicato a “Milano”!”

Tra l’altro una scelta ideale anche dal punto di vista del testo; Philipp e i suoi amici ai tempi spesso si spostavano da Locarno il sabato pomeriggio per godersi Milano, metropoli eccitante con negozi di dischi e di strumenti musicali. “Milano, che belle memorie!”

Wieso singt Fankhauser italienisch? Und wieso Dalla? Und wieso ausgerechnet Milano?
Philipp Fankhauser hat den grössten Teil seiner Jungendjahre im Tessin verbracht und kam darum mit der Musik der grössten italienischen Cantautori der siebziger und achtziger Jahre in Kontakt. De Gregori, De André, Battisti, Guccini, Bennato, allen voran Lucio Dalla, welche damals in den italienischen und Tessiner Radios auf und ab gespielt wurden. In Philipps Plattensammlung befand sich (und befindet sich natürlich heute noch) das Album «Lucio Dalla» aus dem Jahr 1978 mit den beiden Nummern «L’anno che verrà» und «Milano». «Ehrlichweise muss ich zugeben, dass ich eigentlich meinen liebsten Dalla-Song, l’anno che verrà, singen wollte, ich das aber nicht geschafft habe. Lucio Dalla hatte einen enormen Stimmumfang und ich habe keine für mich richtige Tonart gefunden. Darum «Milano», mein zweitliebster Dalla-Song!» erklärt Fankhauser.

Eine gute Wahl, auch was den Text betrifft; Philipp und seine Freunde fuhren damals regelmässig von Locarno nach Milano und verbrachten zahlreiche Samstage in dieser aufregenden Metropole. Plattenläden und Musikläden. “Milano, che belle memorie!”

Philipp Fankhauser a passé la plus grande partie de sa jeunesse au Tessin où il est entré en contact avec la musique des plus grands chansonniers italiens des années septante et huitante. De Gregori, De André, Battisti, Guccini, Bennato et surtout Lucio Dalla, qui passaient sans arrêt à la radio en Italie et au Tessin à l’époque. La discographie de Philipp contenait (et contient encore aujourd’hui) l’album éponyme «Lucio Dalla» de 1978 avec les deux morceaux «L’anno che verrà» et «Milano». «Je dois reconnaître qu’en réalité je voulais chanter ma chanson préférée de Dalla, «L’anno che verrà», mais que je n’y suis pas parvenu. Lucio Dalla avait une très grande tessiture vocale et je n’ai pas réussi à trouver la tonalité qui me convenait. C’est pourquoi j’ai choisi «Milano», ma deuxième chanson préférée de Dalla!» explique Fankhauser.

Un bon choix, aussi en ce qui concerne le texte. À l’époque, Philipp et ses amis partaient régulièrement de Locarno pour se rendre à Milan, passant d’innombrables samedis dans cette métropole excitante, flânant dans les magasins de disques et d’instruments de musique. «Milano, che belle memorie!»

Why does Fankhauser sing italian? And why Lucio Dalla? And what’s with Milano?
Philipp Fankhauser spent the larger part of his youth in the italian speaking part of Switzerland, the canton Ticino. It was there that he was exposed to the greatest Italian Cantautori (singer/songwriter) of the seventies and the eighties. Francesco De Gregori, Fabrizio De André, Lucio Battisti, Francesco Guccini, Edoardo Bennato, and formost the great, late Lucio Dalla. They, and many more, were played on heavy rotation by radio stations in Ticino and Northern Italy. Fankhauser’s record collection contained several Dalla vinyls, among them the 1978 album “Lucio Dalla” that contained Philipp’s favorite song “L’Anno che verrà” (The year that will come), and the beautiful ballad “Milano”. «In all honesty», says Philipp Fankhauser today, «I actually wanted to record l’anno che verrà, but it is out my vocal range. Dalla had an incredibly broad range, and I couldn’t be satisfied with my rendition. So I chose my second favorite – a beautiful ode to the city of Milan, Italy.

A good choice also as far as the lyrics go; Philipp and his friends often drove from Locarno 100 miles to Milan and spent many Saturdays in record and music shops. “Milan, what beautiful memories!”
