In this evocative interview, we step into the legacy of Srishtidhar Mahato, a true custodian of Manbhum’s folk soul, alongside his brother, the celebrated Jhumur artist Karmabir Mahato. Purulia - once Manbhum breathes with a culture as ancient as the hills of Ajodhya, where Chhau dancers, Karam festivals, Tusu celebrations, and the haunting melodies of Jhumur songs weave together in a timeless harmony.
Srishtidhar Mahato’s journey is rooted in the village of Jambad under Kenda P.S of Purulia. Born around the 1950s, he committed his life to nurturing the roots of Manbhum’s cultural heritage. Driven by an unyielding vision, he established "Manbhum Janajati Sanskriti Sangha" to unify Chhau artists across the district, later founding "Jana Kalyan Chhau Nritya Party" in his village. His journey found its zenith in "Jambad Milan Akhra," a living tapestry of art and togetherness. Here, men and women alike gather to celebrate their shared inheritance of Chhau, Karam, Jhumur, and Tusu dance, carrying this cultural flame beyond Purulia into the neighboring lands of Chota Nagpur.
Beyond his role as an organizer, Srishtidhar Mahato has poured his soul into the written word. His works are a love letter to the folk traditions of Manbhum - a treasury of Jhumur songs, Kudmali social customs, local lore, folktales and Tusu melodies. Researchers from far and wide seek his guidance, drawn to his wisdom and unbounded passion for Manbhumi folklore.
Now in his eighties, Srishtidhar Mahato remains as tireless as ever, while his brother, Karmabir Mahato, takes up the mantle as the director of "Jambad Milan Akhra." This video series offers an intimate portrait of two stalwart brothers whose lives illuminate the beauty and resilience of Manbhum’s folk heritage.
