Disney Is Changing Fort Wilderness — Forever

Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground has been a quiet camping refuge inside Walt Disney World for more than 50 years. For many RV campers and Disney fans, Fort Wilderness isn’t just a campground – it’s “home,” and one of the last true links to Walt Disney’s original Florida Project vision for outdoor recreation and rough camping at Disney World.

But with Disney’s new Lakeshore Lodge Disney Vacation Club resort now rising just beyond the trees near Pioneer Hall, many Fort Natives are asking: will Fort Wilderness ever feel the same?

In this first episode of our Fort Wilderness Lakeshore Effect series, we take a deep dive into the growing controversy around Lakeshore Lodge – a modern, multi story DVC resort being built on the shore across from Fort Wilderness. We’ll look at how this project could change the identity, sightlines, and peaceful escape that have defined Disney’s Fort Wilderness for decades.
