Who else feels like October is totally Satie month?? Trois Sarabandes performed in the yard on keyboard a fine Sunday afternoon, Oct. 13, 2024. Apologies for the miscount in the last few bars of III, my brain suddenly stopped working.
I personally think of Erik Satie’s Trois Sarabades (1887) as the root of ambient music as we know it. A slow orbit of distinct sonic events, much akin to Eno’s “Music for Airports.” As you may know, Satie’s original manuscript was riddled with intentionally difficult notation. Double-sharps, and double-flats abound, making a rather simple piece unnecessarily difficult. He was something of a meme-ing troll for his time. For instance, one D major chord spelled as Ebb, Gb, Bbb. Funny? Maybe. Annoying? Yep.
Unsurprisingly there are a couple notational inconsistencies throughout many of the recorded performances of this piece, especially surrounding a certain series of chords over a pedal B in II, and a few other typos that appear. I’ve marked these spots in red, and used my own discretion to choose the absolute best and most ideal option.
