Amtrak 138 and 82, "Phase VII" painted P42's, power the California Zephyr, Ottumwa, IA 4/12/24

On April 12th, 2024, Amtrak's latest P42 to be repainted in the new "Phase VII" paint scheme made its way west leading the California Zephyr, as I caught the train in Ottumwa, Iowa. The train was right on schedule, and after getting it arriving at the station, I walked up along the tracks as the train pulled forward for its second stop (required due to the Ottumwa platform refurbishment taking place), to the other end of the platforms near Gateway Drive as the train departed.

Amtrak's Phase VII paint scheme was introduced on its latest long-distance power, the ALC-42 "Charger" locomotives, that are gradually being delivered and deployed throughout the system. More recently Amtrak has started to roll out the new livery on older equipment as well, including the P42's. Locomotive 174 was the first to be repainted, quickly followed by units 82, 167, and 138. In fact, P42 138 had just reached Chicago the day before after being released from Beech Grove, making this its first revenue run after its repaint. More Genesis diesels are expected to get the Phase VII paint throughout the rest of this year, as well as other rolling stock.

All of the current Phase VII-painted P42's with the exception of 167 have already made runs on the California Zephyr, and I've caught them many times over the past month as they passed through Iowa.
