In early-19th-century Kentucky, Julia Chinn lived a contradiction the law refused to name. She was enslaved, yet publicly called the “wife” of Richard Mentor Johnson—a powerful politician who would become Vice President of the United States. She managed his household, bore his children, and lived in full view of society, while the law continued to define her as property. This documentary examines how slavery absorbed intimacy, erased consent, and allowed a nation to accept a woman as family in public while denying her personhood in court.
