It's been a little over a year since my catastrophic, poly-trauma motorcycle accident. During the crash the engine guard bar on my motorcycle tried to shear my lower left leg off. Due to the chunk of missing bone in the tibia, the orthopedic surgeon installed a titanium, tibial intramedullary nail running the length of the tibia (pounded down through the top of the tibial plateau.) It's been a long year of recovery, but I can finally walk without limping. Cycling and climbing are both pretty much back online, but skiing was still a question mark. I tried once at the end of the season last year (Spring of 2024), but it was an absolute no-go. My left leg wasn't remotely strong enough to set an edge or take the force of skiing. I made one run last season and ended up skiing down on the right leg only. So we're trying again this season. It wasn't great, nowhere near like I used to be, but It was a major improvement over the last time. Gives me encouragement to work harder on my rehabilitation, and hope that I'll get back to my old self eventually.
If you want to see what's involved with that surgery, here's a good animated video of what they had to do to me: • Tibial Nail System—Standard Surgical Techn...
