Define what fin equations, boundary conditions, and fin performance variables are and how to apply them in fin problems.
Introduction to straight fins and pin fins, that uses a combination of conduction/convection to transport heat away from a surface, often of known temperature base Tb. Heat Equations are given, in order to solve for a given fin heat rate qf with specific boundary conditions (Convection, Adiabatic, Infintely Long, etc.). New parameters m and M are introduced, such to properly apply the fin heat equation for the correct boundary conditions. Fin performance equations such as ‘effectiveness’ and ‘efficiency’ are defined such that enable future design decisions regarding whether to add fins for heat removal purposes.
·Example 3-7 (6:29) is a bonus problem for students. It will not be covered in this video.
·Example 3-8 (13:23) will apply the solution steps for a copper fin, toward for determining the fin heat rate, and calculate its fin performance (effectiveness+efficiency)
