Most people assume that if an oil “meets the spec,” it must be good oil. In reality, oil specifications like API, ILSAC, and dexos are minimum performance standards designed around warranty coverage, emissions compliance, and total cost of ownership—not maximum engine life.
In this video, I explain what oil specs actually test, why they are pass-or-fail, and where they fall short in real-world use. We break down things like TBN retention, oil volatility (NOACK), shear stability, and why two oils with the same approval can perform very differently over time.
If you drive a GDI engine, a turbocharged vehicle, live in a hot climate, or plan to keep your vehicle to 250,000 miles or beyond, this is information worth understanding before choosing oil.
This isn’t about brands. It’s about knowing the difference between oil that’s acceptable and oil that’s excellent.
