On March 11, 2011, the day exactly 11 years ago, the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami cut a swathe through Japan, devastating the Tōhoku Pacific coast with a tremendous tsunami and touching off a triple meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.

This piece 花は咲く(Flower will bloom), with a heart-breaking narrative in which the living are seen through the eyes of the dead, was composed by 菅野よう子 in 2012 in remembrance of and to appeal for disaster funds for the victims. It was also used as the background music for a performance by the Japanese living figure skating legend, 羽生結弦(Yuzuru Hanyu), who was one of the victims of the catastrophe when he was 16.

11 years after the disaster, I have recorded the piece as a recorder quartet arranged by 金子健治, in my hope of easing the grief of the living and commemorating and resting the souls of the deceased. They will be etched on our heart.
