ಅಶ್ವತ್ಥಪುರ ದೇಶಸ್ಥ ಸಮಾಜದ ಬಹುಪಾಲು ಬಾಂಧವರು ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಕನ್ನಡ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಕಾರ್ಕಳ ಮತ್ತು ಮಂಗಳೂರು ತಾಲೂಕುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ (2004 ರಲ್ಲಿ ತಾಲೂಕುಗಳ ಇರುವಿಕೆಯಂತೆ) ನೆಲೆಸಿದ್ದವರು. ಜೀವನ ನಿರ್ವಹಣೆಗೆ ಕೃಷಿಯಿಂದ ಬರುವ ಆದಾಯ ಸಾಲದಾದ ಕಾರಣ 19 ನೆಯ ಶತಮಾನದ ಉತ್ತರಾರ್ಧ - 20 ನೆಯ ಶತಮಾನದ ಪೂರ್ವಾರ್ಧದಲ್ಲಿ ಪಶ್ಚಿಮಘಟ್ಟಗಳನ್ನು ದಾಟಿ ಬಯಲುಸೀಮೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಉದ್ಯೋಗವರಸಿ ಹೋಗುವುದು ಅನಿವಾರ್ಯವಾಯಿತು.

20 ನೆಯ ಶತಮಾನದ ಉತ್ತರಾರ್ಧದಲ್ಲಿ ಜಾರಿಯಾದ ಒಕ್ಕಲುಮಸೂದೆಯ ಕಾರಣ, ತಮ್ಮ ಜಮೀನನ್ನು ಗೇಣಿಗೆ ನೀಡಿ ಘಟ್ಟದಾಚೆ ಉದ್ಯೋಗ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಬಹುತೇಕ ಕುಟುಂಬಗಳು ತಮ್ಮ ಮನೆ, ಜಮೀನು ಕಳೆದುಕೊಂಡು ತಂತಮ್ಮ ಮೂಲ ಮನೆ, ಮೂಲ ಸ್ಥಳಗಳಿಂದ ದೂರವಾದವು. ಮೂಲ ಮನೆ / ಸ್ಥಳಗಳ ಹೆಸರುಗಳು ಆಯಾ ಕುಟುಂಬಗಳ ಸದಸ್ಯರ ಹೆಸರುಗಳ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಬರೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಸರ್ ನೇಮ್ ಅಥವಾ ಇನಿಶಿಯಲ್ಸ್ ಅಷ್ಟಕ್ಕೇ ಸೀಮಿತವಾದವು.

ಸಮಾಜ ಬಾಂಧವರಿಗೆ, ವಿಶೇಷವಾಗಿ ಯುವಪೀಳಿಗೆಗೆ ಅನುಕೂಲವಾಗಲಿ ಎನ್ನುವ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಯಿಂದ, 2004 ರ ರಾಮನವಮಿ ಉತ್ಸವದ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ ಸರ್ವಶ್ರೀ ವಂಟಿಮಾರು ಕೃಷ್ಣರಾವ್ (ಪೋಸ್ಟ್ ಮಾಸ್ತರ್), ಶಾಖಾಪುರ ಸುರೇಶ, ಕುಂಚಿಡೇಲು ವಸಂತಕುಮಾರ್, ವಂಟಿಮಾರು ಕರುಣಾಕರ ರಾವ್, ಮಾಯಣ ಹನುಮಂತರಾವ್, ಬೋಳ ಶ್ರೀರಾಂ ಮುಂತಾದ ಅನುಭವಿ ಹಿರಿಯರಿಂದ ಸಮಾಜ ಬಾಂಧವರ ಮೂಲ ಸ್ಥಳಗಳ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ಸಂಗ್ರಹಿಸಿದೆವು. ಅದನ್ನು ಆಧರಿಸಿ ಅಶ್ವತ್ಥಪುರದ ಶ್ರೀ ಸೀತಾರಾಮಚಂದ್ರ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದಿಂದ ಪೂರ್ವ, ಪಶ್ಚಿಮ, ಉತ್ತರ, ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ದಿಕ್ಕುಗಳಲ್ಲಿರುವ, ಬಂಧು ಕುಟುಂಬಗಳ ಮೂಲ ಸ್ಥಳಗಳ (ಶ್ರೀ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದಿಂದ ಆಯಾ ಸ್ಥಳಗಳಿಗಿರುವ ದೂರದ ಮಾಹಿತಿ ಸಹಿತ) ನಾಲ್ಕು ನಕ್ಷೆಗಳನ್ನು ಸಿದ್ಧಪಡಿಸಿದೆವು.

The majority of the Ashwathapura Deshastha Samaj members were settled in the Karkala and Mangalore taluks of Dakshina Kannada district (as per the administrative taluka areas in 2004). Since income from agriculture was insufficient for livelihood, it became necessary for members of most of the families to cross the Western Ghats and seek employment in the plains of Karnataka in the late 19th century and early 20th century.

Because of the Tenancy Act enacted in the latter half of the 20th century, most of the families who were leasing out their farm land and working in distant places lost their homes, lands and lost touch with their places of origin. The names of the original homes/places were limited to the surnames or initials written along with the names of the members of the respective families.

With a view to benefit the community members, especially the younger generation, during the 2004 Ramanavami festival, we collected information about the places of origin of the community members from experienced elders like Sarvashree Vantimaru Krishna Rao (Post Master), Shakhapura Suresh, Kunchidelu Vasanthakumar, Vantimaru Karunakara Rao, Mayana Hanumantharao, Bola Sriram and others. Based on that, we prepared four maps of the places of origin of the families (including the distance from the temple to the respective places) in the east, west, north and south directions from the Sri Sitaramachandra Temple in Ashwathapura.
