EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE PARISH #92: YAPHAM

Welcome back to the East Yorkshire Wolds folks and to the village of Yapham, which is situated about 2 miles Northeast of Pocklington. The parish includes the hamlet of Meltonby to the North

Originally known as Iapun or Lapun, the first reference to the village can be found in the Domesday Book. Later known as Yapome, its not known when the current spelling of the name was adopted.

Yapham has always been agricultural. There are several farms around the village and a few still remain today. There was also a mill which stopped working in 1909 thanks to an act of God.

There’s a small church here which you need to be quite short to get into, and there’s a former village school which has been turned into a village hall. The allotments will please the fans here as well because they’ve got an interesting little tale to tell, and the cricket club is one of only a handful in the entire country that did something unusual in the 1940s.

The village was also once served by a railway station. Named Yapham Gate, it was on the York to Beverley Line. It was short lived though, closing in 1865, after only opening in 1847.

And we can’t leave out Meltonby, so there’s a short drive through the hamlet as well. Its all surrounded by the peacefulness of the East Yorkshire Wolds, and pretty much wherever you look you’re going to get a really good view.

In short there’s a bit to see in Yapham, so let’s go and see it!
