Today we're taking a look at the brand new Ryan SCW by the A1R Design Bureau. When it was released yesterday it came as quite a surprise, as the SCW is a very rare aircraft and one I never expected to see in the sim.
The Ryan SCW is part of the Ryan SC series, which were mainly small sport aircraft, but were also used by the Civil Air Patrol on the East coast for anti-submarine patrol. Depending on the source, SC stands for "Sports-Coupe" or "Sport Cabin". The prototype of the Ryan SC first flew in 1937 and was powered by a Menasco inline engine, like they were used in Ryan STAs. Production aircraft used a Warner Super Scarab 7-cylinder radial engine producing 145 hp. The "W" in SCW represents the Warner engine. In total only twelve SCW's were built, of which at least three are still airworthy. Of the three only one is powered by the original 145 hp Warner engine. Another one is powered by an almost identical 165hp Warner engine and the third is powered by a modern boxer-engine.
Like I wrote before, on my Ryan STA video, in my opinion A1R creates some of the visually most beautiful addons for MSFS and the SCW is certainly no exception. The visual model is perfect down to the smallest detail.
The sounds are fantastic too and so is the flight model. It is a ton of fun and feels very convincing. Looking at the tiny vertical fin, it is no surprise that the rudder isn't the most effective.
The Ryan is a MSFS 2020 native release, but according to A1R's website is MSFS 2024 compatible.
At around 15-18 USD, depending on where you are, it is very fairly priced and if you are into Golden Age era aircraft or vintage aircraft in general I can't recommend the Ryan highly enough.
It's awesome to have another A1R release and I'm really looking forward to what'll come next. With the Ryan STA and the SCW covered, a Ryan PT-22 would be awesome!
For this flight I took the SCW up for some low-level fun above Emerald Scenery Design's fantastic Forwood Farm, one of my favorite airfields in the sim. It has a ton of atmosphere and is just perfect for sunset fun in golden age era aircraft.
