~つつ/~つつも/~つつある

1. While = ~ながら
Stem + つつ
~つつis used when you want to say that two events or actions are going on at the same time, same as "~ながら". It is not often used in spoken language, but is mainly used in written language.
栄養バランスを考えつつ、家族のご飯を作っています。
I make meals for my family while considering nutritional balance.
既に勉強した漢字の復習をしつつ、新しい漢字も増やしていこうと思う。
I plan to increase the number of new kanji I know while reviewing the kanji that I have already studied.
大好きな彼女が夢に出て来たらいいなと思いつつ眠った。
I fell asleep thinking that it would be nice if the girl that I like appeared in my dreams.
2. even though; despite = ~けれども
Stem + つつ(も)
~つつもis used when the former part and latter part of ~つつもare contrasting ideas, same as "~が" and "~のに". In part A, a word that expresses the state of mind will be used.
明日こそは早く起きようと考えつつも、昼まで寝てしまいました。
Even though I was thinking I must wake up early tomorrow, I ended up sleeping until noon.
ダイエットをしなきゃと思いつつも、甘いものを見たとたんに食べてしまう。
Even though I think I have to go on a diet, I eat sweets the moment I see them.
水道代がかかると知りつつも、水を出しっぱなしにしてしまう。
Even though I know that the water bill will be costly, I leave the water running.
3. to be doing; to be in the process of doing = ~ている
~つつあるis used when you want to say a change in a thing is in progress. It is also used when you want to say that an action is in progress toward completion.
日本は高齢化が進みつつある。
Japan's population continues to age.
少しずつ日本語が話せるようになりつつある。
I am becoming able to speak Japanese little by little.
