Accessible design and Inclusive design | UX Design Tips

There are 1 billion people, or 15% of the world’s population, who are suffering from chronic disabilities. Many of them struggle to interact with a digital device or interface because of physical limitations, and designers are working hard to lower the technical barrier for this demographic with accessible and inclusive design.

They may sound the same to you, but they are two different things. Accessibility design focuses on personalizing the product to ensure that people with disabilities can access essential digital products effectively.

Products with accessible design are mainly for those with disabilities, such as ramps for wheelchairs and blind-only lanes on the pavement. People with disabilities may find these adaptations and facilities helpful, but they are not particularly for non-disabled individuals.

The inclusive design focuses on the design process itself, intending to create a product that can be enjoyed by all populations, regardless of their physical conditions. Designers will take people of all characters into account when designing a product so people can customize it according to their needs.

Therefore, it is safe to say that accessibility is a part of inclusive design, but not the other way around. When designing a product, the designer should make sure that their digital products can be used by the widest range of demographic.
