Today we are visiting one of the most mysterious temples of India, the Dakshineswar Kali Temple. Situated on the banks of the Hooghly River in Kolkata, this temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali. It was founded by Rani Rashmoni, a wealthy philanthropist from the 19th century, who was deeply religious and devoted to Goddess Dakshineswar Kali.
Rani Rashmoni’s vision during her pilgrimage to Varanasi inspired her to build this temple. She was guided by a divine experience to create a space for Kali’s worship and to unite devotees in faith. Over the years, the temple has become famous not only for its religious significance but also for its connection to Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, who experienced profound spiritual awakening here. His devotion to Kali shaped his teachings and inspired countless followers, including Swami Vivekananda.
The temple is a stunning example of traditional Bengali architecture, built in the ‘nava-ratna’ style with nine spires and a central dome. The complex includes twelve Shiva temples along the riverfront where Ramakrishna meditated deeply. At the heart of the temple, the idol of Goddess Bhavatarini stands gracefully upon the chest of a reclining Shiva, symbolizing creation and transformation.
Nearby, the sacred Panchavati grove holds five special trees planted under Ramakrishna’s guidance, a peaceful spot where he spent many years in intense spiritual practice. The temple grounds offer gardens and serene river views, perfect for meditation and prayer.
Each year, the temple attracts thousands of visitors for major festivals like Durga Puja and Kali Puja, celebrated with vibrant rituals, music, and devotion. These occasions fill the temple with spiritual energy and bring communities together in worship.
Close to Dakshineshwari Temple is the Adyapeeth Mandir, dedicated to Adyashakti — the primordial divine energy. Founded around the same time by Baba Kali Chaitanya, this tranquil temple complements the spiritual experience of Dakshineshwari, offering a peaceful retreat for devotees seeking blessings and inner strength. Adyapeeth also celebrates major festivals with heartfelt devotion and has become an important pilgrimage site.
Whether you are drawn by history, architecture, or spirituality, Dakshineshwari Kali Temple and nearby Adyapeeth Mandir offer a powerful journey into the heart of divine feminine energy. Join us as we explore these sacred sites, their stories, and the timeless devotion that continues to inspire millions.
To reach the temple, you can take a metro or taxi from Kolkata. The nearest metro station is Dakshineshwar Metro Station, and from there, a recently built skywalk takes devotees directly to the temple.
The metro station itself is built in the same architectural style as the temple. While walking along the skywalk, you will find many shops selling puja items and handicrafts.
this is one of the amazing temple to add on your Bucket list of Kolkata or places to visit in Kolkata.
