Youth of color, including Latino youth, disproportionately face higher rates of contact with the justice system and, when detained or placed, have less access to quality education K-12 support services. Additionally, detained or placed youth of color youth face a lack of educational opportunities post release. Despite decreases in youth involved with the justice system in recent years, it is crucial to bolster the educational resources youth need to succeed if and when they enter the justice system. This panel will discuss the state of youth juvenile systems across the US, K-12 educational gaps inside institutions, and the potential opportunities for the policy reform given today’s political climate.
