The Million-Dollar Valley America Buried in Silence — Eagle Mountain, California
In 1948, industrialist Henry J. Kaiser built an entire city in the Mojave Desert to mine iron ore for his steel empire. For 35 years, Eagle Mountain thrived—a self-contained company town of 4,000 people living in one of the harshest environments on earth. Then, in 1983, Kaiser closed the mine and abandoned the town overnight. Today, Eagle Mountain is a ghost town and a toxic pit lake, nearly forgotten by history.
This is the story of how American capitalism built a community, extracted its wealth, and then walked away—leaving behind questions we still refuse to answer about work, profit, and what we owe to the people who build our prosperity.
