Balmacaan is the name of an estate and forest in Scotland. This region is very rainy throughout the year. This type of weather is strongly reflected in the wind breaking design features like the covered buttonholes of the fly front or the collar that you can flip up and close with a belt. Traditionally this coat is made with a wool fabric for the winter months, but the current trend is to lighten it up with various casual fabrics. Another way to give this coat a modern twist is by creating a raglan sleeve that is very functional and three dimensional. Burberry calls this type of coat a "car coat".
バルマカーンとはスコットランドの地名です。年間を通じて雨の多い地域。比翼仕立てでボタン穴が隠れているとか、襟を立ててボタンやベルトで前を閉めて風よけに出来るなどのデザインはスコットランドの気候を反映しているのでしょう。ウールで冬用に仕立てるのが伝統的ですが、様々な素材を使用し軽くカジュアルに仕立てるほうが現代のトレンドですね。ラグラン袖を機能的で立体的に作ることで新しい雰囲気のデザインになります。バーバリーはこのタイプのデザインを「Car coat」と呼んでいます。
