Sexual Exploitation Allegations: Mother Files Lawsuit Against Roblox & Discord

A Camden County mother is suing the parent companies of Roblox and Discord. She says her then 11-year-old daughter was groomed and exploited on the online gaming and chat platforms. NBC 10's Shaira Arias spoke to the lawyers representing the family.

The mother of a Camden County 14-year-old is suing the online gaming and chat platforms, Roblox and Discord. The lawsuit claims that when the teen was only 11 years old, she was groomed and sexually exploited by a man who pretended to be a young boy. The lawsuit alleges the man sent explicit texts and images of himself to the child and manipulated the minor into sending graphic pictures. We spoke to the lawyer representing the family.

This mom found out that this was going on with their child from really the child's change of behavior, the child acting, you know, off, just a different demeanor or different decorum around the house, and in their interactions with their family, and went through their phone.

The lawsuit accuses the popular apps of allowing predators to roam freely while neglecting to provide safeguards for children.

I've created an account to kind of investigate these claims and see how it works. And, you know, along with other members of my firm, doing the same thing, was a nine-year-old little girl in about three minutes with zero verification, zero measures.

In a statement to NBC 10, Roblox said in part, we are deeply troubled by an incident that endangers our users. While we cannot comment on claims raised in litigation, we always strive to hold ourselves to the highest safety standards. This includes strong processes to detect and act on problematic behaviors, including advanced technology and 24 /7 human moderation and attempts to direct users off-platform, where safety standards and moderation may be less stringent than ours.

We also reached out to Discord and are waiting to hear back. In the past, they've told NBC News they require all users to be at least 13 to use the platform and use a combination of advanced technology and trained safety teams to proactively find and remove content that violates their policies.

Now, the family's lawyer did tell us that they are suing for an undisclosed amount of money. Shahira Arias, NBC 10 News.
