How gear ratios let you climb steep hills and bomb down trails: Mountain Bike Drivetrain 101

In Episode 2 of Understanding Mountain Bikes, we take a look at your drivetrain, the component group that converts the power from your legs into rotation at your rear wheel, and pushes your bike forward. It consists of five parts: the shifter, derailleur, cassette, chain, and crankset (including chainring, pedals, and bottom bracket). We take a look at each of these and examine how they work together to make bikes one of the most efficient vehicles in existence.

In this series, we’ve separated all the parts of a mountain bike into six “systems,” which we'll break down into easily digestible episodes. With a good understanding of how all the components of a bicycle work together, you’ll be able to more confidently approach mountain biking, no matter how long you've been riding!
