Houdini 21 brings a major upgrade to the MPM (Material Point Method) solver, and I’ve put together a playground project where you can freely explore and tweak the newest tools. It’s technical yet playful—a great way to dip in and learn.
What’s New in Houdini 21 MPM (from SideFX)
Sleeping controls to speed up sims when particles are largely static
Automatic Resimulation, resetting and recalculating the start frame when anything affecting the DOP changes
Enhanced Surface Tension: choose Point-Based (accurate, stable) or Grid-Based (fast for large systems) methods
Deterministic Particle-to-Grid default for consistent, reproducible sims and faster handling of densely packed points
Smarter Collision controls for more reliable interactions

On the Source, Collider, and Container side:
Emit particles on top of existing ones using positive pressure (great for whipped cream effects!)
Phase IDs to separate interactions when using point-based surface tension
age attribute generation for particles
Expanded Velocity controls and deforming collider interpolation (“Expand to Cover Velocity”)
Start-state override for sleeping behavior
Upper/Lower Padding on containers
Per-voxel stickiness and friction control

Post-processing tools:
MPM Surface SOP: outputs VDBs or meshes for renderable geometry
MPM Debris Source: extracts points where material breaks—great for secondary debris sims
MPM Post-Fracture and MPM Deform Pieces: fracture and transfer dynamics to geometry for destruction workflows

Neural Point Surfacing: AI-powered algorithms to rebuild surfaces from point clouds—smooth, detailed results
