This was a short trip from Graz (LOWG) to Niederöblarn (LOGO) situated south of the Grimming mountain in upper Styria. It was a great sunny day for flying, with very calm winds. Besides that, I made a series of bad decision during final approach and landing. I’m happy that all turned in luck at the end.
It was a quite challenging approach. Coming from east, you have to overfly Aigen MATZ in 5500 ft and quickly descent down to 3000 ft for the very tight traffic pattern at Niederöblarn. Finally on the approach I made some bad decisions. I was too high on the final and I started to slip. At this point I was quite confident, but on the threshold the speed was too high. Bad decision number 1: I continued the approach. I managed the touchdown smooth but still with to high speed. Bad decision number 2: I still not performed a go around. At some point there was a bump on the runway and the plane slightly lifted up again and bounced. Latest a this point a go around would have been a good decision. In summary, there was more than one point, where a Go Arround would have been the better decision!
Finally, it was more than lucky that I could manage to stop before the end of the runway.
Lessons learned:
Speed to high on the Final Approach: GO ARROUND
Unstable on the Final Approach, even when it feels confident (it is wrong confidence): GO ARROUND
Back to traffic circuit training on a tight airfield for some Touch & Go’s and GO ARROUND’s
For this day: One piece of luck moved from my luck bag to my experience bag (Luck -1 | Experience +1).
Luck Bag & Experience Bag cite from “Ferry Pilot: Nine Lives Over the North Atlantic” by John McCauley. It is worth to read.
