In Fair Trial Programme of Project 39A, National Law University, Delhi’s 1st Access to Justice Annual Lecture, Supreme Court of India judge, Hon’ble Mr. Justice Abhay S Oka approached the idea of access to justice by touching upon a wide gamut of issues within the broader concept. He delved into the challenges of access to justice in India such as delay, and addressed issues from domestic violence victims to underpaid migrant workers. He also highlighted the undue pressure on the judiciary, particularly in cases of serious offences and issues surrounding bail. Justice Oka emphasised the need to increase awareness about the criminal justice process within masses, and encouraged law schools to give back to the society by becoming part of the trial court bar, judiciary and academia. He concluded by calling for introspection within the judiciary to ensure quality justice as India approaches its 75th year of the Constitution.
