Maya Bay is a stunningly beautiful bay. Inside the bay there are several beaches, most are small and some only exist at low tide. The main one is around 200 metres long with silky soft white sand, underwater colourful coral and exotic fish in exceptionally clear water.
Maya Bay has become the main tourist attraction of Phi Phi since " The Beach " was filmed here in 1999.
The beach had been receiving an estimated 5,000 visitors per day, while 200 boats per day set anchor in the bay. As of 2019 the park is closed to visitors because of environmental issues caused by overtourism.
Surveys by marine biologists had found that 80 percent of the coral reefs surrounding the bay have been destroyed by boat traffic and pollution. Marine life was virtually nonexistent as a result.
